Chapter 5: Caleb

I felt my heart race as I got near the door. I wanted to tell my dad about the future of this MC, of everything. When I finally got to the doorway, I hesitated for but a second, and then opened it.

“Hey there,” my father said.

“Hey, Dad. The deed is done,” I told him.

“That’s right. You did the right thing. So did Mary. I know it was hard for her, but she needs to know the truth. That this business isn’t easy for anyone, and it requires you to figure out what to do about it,” he said.

“Yeah. Which is why…I think we need to talk. The truth is, Dad, I don’t want to run the MC. I know you said you were going to give it to me after everything was done, but…I don’t want it. I don’t want it to exist anymore if I’m going to be honest. If it does exist, it’ll only hurt other people.”

He sat there, his hands in his lap as he listened to me.

“I see. So, you don’t want to take this over?”

“No, Dad. I don’t want to live the life of a criminal anymore. I know you kept the MC open in order to help with the sales of the drugs here but…I don’t want that on my hands,’ I said.

“But Caleb, this guarantees you a place of power in the city. If you say no, I am going to disband and then we will have to cover our tracks.”

I felt the sting of guilt course through me. I could tell he was a little bit upset that I was refusing to follow in his footsteps. But I nodded.

“I made up my mind, Dad. The thing is, I want to spend my life with Mary. She changed me, and this whole thing has been hard on her,” I explained.

“Yeah. So, did she kill him?” my dad asked.

I paused, noticing the look in his eyes. I nodded.

“She wanted to do it,”

“It was the right thing to do. I think it partially has to do with Zephyr since she was married to him for so long, but...I feel bad she had to take those matters into her own hands,” he said.

“I feel guilty as well. I know she’s trying her best, and I can tell she’s quite worried about what might become of us.”

“Well, what do you want from this?” he asked.

I hesitated for a heartbeat. I wondered if I should tell him.

“The truth is, Dad. I want to spend my life with her. I don’t want her to hurt anymore, which is why I don’t want to take over the MC. I want to…I want to be with her, no matter what,” I told him.

He looked at me, assessing my face.

“So, you want to marry her?”

“Yes, Dad. Not just yet, but I do want to marry her down the line. I feel like it is what I wanted since the day I met her.”

“Very good. I see you’ve put some thought into it.
